Building a Personal Brand in Law: Lessons for Aspiring Lawyers and Solicitors at The Urban Lawyers Careers Conference
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of leading personal branding workshops at the annual Urban Lawyers Careers Conference, including the impactful 2017 event held at Herbert Smith Freehills. These sessions have allowed me to connect with ambitious law students and recent graduates, guiding them through the critical process of building a personal brand that supports a strong and meaningful legal career.
Through a series of interactive breakout seminars, I’ve helped future lawyers understand how personal branding is more than just a buzzword, it’s a strategic tool that can shape your career path. Whether you're preparing for a pupillage, applying for training contracts, or considering your first in-house role, having a clear and authentic brand can make all the difference.
One of the most powerful takeaways participants gain from my sessions is the realization that they can take control of their career trajectory by actively shaping their personal brand. It's about being intentional with how you present yourself, how you network, and how you align your identity with your goals.
Here are some key personal branding lessons for new lawyers and solicitors:
1. Be Clear on Your Personal Brand Goals
What do you want to be known for in the legal field? Is it your attention to detail, your advocacy skills, or your commitment to social justice? Defining this early will shape how others perceive you.
2. Align Your Brand with Your Career Goals
Your personal brand should work in harmony with your long-term career vision. Whether you’re aiming for a Magic Circle firm or a boutique practice, ensure your online presence, networking efforts, and resume all reflect that intention.
3. Embrace Your Authentic Self
In a profession known for tradition, it’s easy to feel like you have to conform. But authenticity builds trust. Know who you are and show up with confidence. You can be both professional and true to yourself — and that balance is often what makes a lasting impression.
4. Find Your Voice in Law
Your voice is your power. Whether through thought leadership, LinkedIn posts, speaking at events, or simply how you communicate with clients and colleagues, developing a strong, clear voice is a major step in standing out.
Personal branding is not just for influencers or entrepreneurs, it’s a powerful career tool for lawyers at every stage. As the legal industry continues to evolve, those who define their personal brand early will find themselves better positioned for success, opportunity, and authentic leadership.
If you’re a law student or early-career solicitor ready to take ownership of your professional journey, now is the time to start shaping your brand. Because the legal world needs your voice, your story, and your impact.
Urban Lawyers is an organization that makes the law (in its academic, practical and career contexts) more accessible to marginalised groups in society. It aims to provide inspiration and education to all who have or will come into contact with the law and/or legal profession. By facilitating these personal branding sessions I was able to enhance the delegates understanding of what it is to network with confidence and manoeuvre confidently through their career paths.
Thanks to Dr Tunde Okewale MBE and his amazing team including Isaac Eloi for inviting me to present to so many passionate legal minds.
