Years ago, I stood in front of a room full of incredibly talented professionals who were considered leaders and subject-matter experts in their field, each one brilliant in their own right. I had been brought in to undertake personal brand training within a highly successful global corporation so I assumed that it would be a pretty straightforward session and yet when I asked who felt confident talking about themselves online or sharing their perspective publicly, only one hand went up. 

That moment stuck with me not because I was surprised but because I saw myself in them.

Earlier in my business career, I too had assumed that “personal branding” was something reserved for CEOs, highly successful entrepreneurs making 7 figures or simply the kind of people who just love being in the spotlight. I didn’t see it as something for me or for the everyday professionals doing exceptional work behind the scenes. In fact “personal branding” was associated with having a large ego.

But as I started helping others articulate who they were, what they stood for and why it mattered I realised that personal branding isn’t about ego, it’s about empowerment. It’s about giving people the tools, language and confidence to step out of the background and into their full potential and so I made it my mission to do the work to help others see this too. When I came to that powerful realisation I’ve been passionate about that mission ever since.
