How to Build a LinkedIn Profile That Works for Black Women Professionals and founders in 2026
LinkedIn is one of the most popular professional online networks, it is a great tool to build business and professional relationships, promote the work that you do and keep in touch with key contacts. It is also a great content sharing platform and engagement on the platform can be a powerful way of raising visibility. Yet quite a few business owners and professionals I meet seem to have a love/hate relationship with LinkedIn especially Black women professionals and founder. I can understand why; it is a noisy space, a space that inadvertently leads us to compare ourselves to others. This is of course an inevitable part of human interaction online and offline, but on a platform like LinkedIn it can feel overwhelming and frustrating because it shines a spotlight on others in our industries and sectors. But I really do enjoy using LinkedIn and want more Black women across The UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Africa and The Caribbean to embrace to achieve their goals across business and professional spaces. It is a great space to build your personal brand identity and reputation.
There is an art to self promotion, the type of intentional self promotion that isn't about showing off for the sake of showing off but self promotion that simply showcases what you do in a way that encourages more opportunities. LinkedIn can be great for self-promotion, it is afterall a virtual resume but there are those (some might call them LinkedIn influencers) who can over do things and become a distraction. The platform is no longer just a place to list your experience and hope someone notices. It has become a powerful visibility tool and a space where your voice can open doors that your CV alone cannot.
For Black women professionals and business founders this really matters because when traditional spaces have not always reflected your value or potential, platforms like LinkedIn give you the opportunity to shape your own narrative. You don’t have to do this in a forced or performative way but in a way that is intentional, strategic and rooted in who you are. If you want your LinkedIn profile to work for you in 2026, you need to think beyond job titles and start thinking about positioning.
Spring cleaning and audit your LinkedIn profile
I would say that you have to unfollow/mute people who are distracting you from your core purpose of being on LinkedIn. You can curate your timeline and regularly audit the list of those you follow. I would also set limits on the amount of time you spend on LinkedIn (like any other social media platform) so you don't get caught in the comparison trap.
Start With Positioning Not Perfection
Before you update your profile, get clear on what you want to be known for! This is where so many people get stuck because they try to say everything at once. It is OK to be a multi-hyphenate just make sure that how you share your journey is clear and concise. Think about the work you do and the kind of people or organisations you want to attract. Your positioning is not about shrinking yourself into a box but you do have to make it easier for the right people to recognise your value. When your positioning is clear, everything else becomes easier and flows more naturally so make sure you profile reflects . Your headline makes sense. Your content flows. Your profile starts to feel aligned instead of forced.
Sort out your headline
Your headline is one of the first things people see when they log in to LinkedIn but more importantly, it is one of the main ways you show up in search results. This is where LinkedIn personal branding for Black women becomes practical. A strong headline should tell people what you do, who you help and give a sense of your space or industry so take the time to draft something that reflects your work. Instead of being vague and excessively modest use language that reflects both your expertise and your direction. You are not just describing your current role, you’re signalling where you are going and where you want to go.
Update Your About Section
This is where your profile becomes human and is reflection of who you are. So many About sections sound like they were written for a corporate handbook instead of a real person or worse they just sound like they were an afterthought. Your story matters so use the About section to highlight the journey that shaped how you work and what you stand for. It’s OK to be bold - nobody is going to scold you if you take a chance so for example you might talk about what it felt like navigating spaces where you were underrepresented, share lessons that shaped your leadership style and what drives the work you do now. When someone reads your About section, they should understand what you do, but also why it matters to you.
Experience Should Show Impact
Your experience section is not there to list tasks you have to use it to demonstrate value. Anyone can say they managed projects or led a team but what stands out is showing what changed because you were in the room. Did you improve processes, increase revenue, build something from scratch or create better outcomes for people? Being specific about your impact not only strengthens your credibility, it also improves how your profile performs in search.
Visibility Comes From Consistency
You do not need to post every day to be visible on LinkedIn; what matters more is showing up consistently and with intention. Your content can be simple: share lessons from your career, insights from your industry or reflections on your experiences as a Black woman navigating professional spaces. The key is to stop overthinking and to start sharing. You are not trying to impress everyone, you are building recognition with the right audience so stop holding yourself back and move forward consistently.
Engagement Is Part of Your Strategy
A strong LinkedIn presence is not just about what you post, it’s also about how you engage. When you comment thoughtfully on other people’s posts, you increase your visibility and position yourself as someone with a perspective. Engagement is also how community is built. Supporting other Black women and underrepresented voices is particularly significant but networking across your wider sector and industry is very important. It is part of building a network that reflects and amplifies your values and skills so actively engage.
